Soybean vegetable wax: properties and benefits

Scenting a room as part of our personal, daily or habitual rituals gives us a moment of relaxation where we can concentrate on awakening our sense of smell. A very nice way to do this is by using candles, which, in addition to scenting in a very subtle and long-lasting way, are part of the design and aesthetics of our spaces. At Laguna Cyprien we opt for candles made with vegetable soy wax for their environmental and practical benefits.

Candles and types of waxes

Candles are commonly made from paraffin wax, a mixture of hydrocarbons derived from petroleum. It is a good option in terms of quality and price, but not in terms of environmental impact.
Since the 1990s, soybean vegetable wax has been presented as an alternative to reduce the use of petrochemical products. Another vegetable wax is beeswax, which is produced naturally for the construction of beehives.

Soy vegetable wax

Soybean vegetable wax is obtained by converting soybean oil into a solidified fat through a hydrogenation process. This allows the wax to remain solid at room temperature and melt with heat.

What are its properties and benefits?

- Soy wax candles burn at a lower temperature than regular candles: with less fire, the dispersion of the aroma increases.

- They do not emit toxins into the air, compared to paraffin waxes, which emit a greater amount of soot and volatile carbon compounds.

- Due to their slow burning, they can last 2 to 3 times longer than other waxes.

- The fragrance of the candle aromatizes the spaces even without lighting it.

- Soy wax has a very low melting point between 40 and 50°C, so the risk of burning is low and you can even use it to moisturize the skin or give massages; paraffin candles have a melting point of 80°C.

- It is a very friendly wax, you can easily clean it from any surface with soap and water.

How to care for your soy wax candle?

1. On the first burn, allow the candle to burn to the edge of the container to ensure an even burn.

2. Try not to leave your candle lit for more than 2 hours at a time, especially because the metal container gets hot.

3. Trim the tip of the wick regularly. It doesn't have to be between burns, but it does have to be done constantly.

4. When your candle is finished, you can reuse your metal container, extending its life and use, to house a new candle or to store other fragrances such as your Palo Santo or Papier D'Armènie.
